How to plan garage and workshop storage
Store by weight and by how often you need the thing. Keep a clear path to the electrical panel, the water shutoff, and the car door.
Clear the hazards, then the wall
Before shelves, mark the panel, the furnace or water heater clearance, and the path a car door needs. Anything that burns or fumes stays in the storage the manufacturer and local fire rules allow, not above a heat source.

- List tools you use weekly and tools you use twice a year. Weekly tools go between knee and eye height.
- Measure linear feet of wall that are free of doors and panels.
