How to set up a home office monitor

Put the top of the screen at or slightly below eye height, about an arm’s length away if the desk allows, and send cables down the non-mouse side.

Height and distance first

Sit the way you work. The screen should be in front of you, not off to the side for hours. Use the desk planner to see if the desk is deep enough. If it is not, a monitor arm buys distance that a stock stand cannot.

Who this is for

One person at a desk. It is not a medical ergonomics prescription.

Setup

  1. Match brightness to the room so the screen is not a lamp. Lighting is covered in home-office lighting.
  2. Route the power brick with cable planning.
  3. If a laptop dock is involved, check the dock checklist so the cable you hide is the one the dock actually needs.

Limits

Persistent pain is a reason to talk to a clinician, not a reason to keep adjusting a blog diagram.

Questions readers ask

What if the laptop is my only screen?

Raise it on a stand so you are not looking down all day, and add a separate keyboard if you raise it above typing height.
